3 - YOUR DIGITAL COMMUNITY
Being a digital citizen means that you are a member of a worldwide community linked by the Internet. In each community you belong to, there are expectations or rules. In this section, you'll evaluate the rules that already exist about using digital media in our school. Then, you'll work with your classmates to create our yown list of rules that people should follow in the digital community.
Warm up (Workbook)
1. What communities do you belong to?
2. What online communities do you belong to?
2. What are the rules or expectations in these communities? Give 2-3 examples.

COMMUNITIES ALL HAVE RULES AND EXPECTATIONS
Many organizations, companies and governments have rules about how people are allowed to use their digital media. For example, the New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has POLICY 311.
When you use digital media in school, you agree to follow these rules.

Activity # 5 (Workbook)
Open and read the POLICY 311 Use Agreement with your group. Discuss and answer these questions:
1. Why do you think the NB government created this policy?
2. In your opinion, which 2 rules are the most important? Why?
3. In your opinion, are any rules unfair or unnecessary? Why or why not?
4. Create one more rule for this policy. You can also change an existing rule.

The digital community is different from other communities that you belong to. For the most part, there are very few rules. And when they do exist, they are often unclear and hard to enforce. This makes it difficult for many people to decide what is appropriate and fair. Still, just like in the real world, the best advice for how to act online seems to be "use your common sense" and "treat others the way you would want to be treated".
DISCUSSION:
1. What are the problems (negatives) in the digital community that make it unsafe or disrespectful?
2. What should people do when they go online to make it safe and respectful?
